The Marangu Route is the oldest and most popular trekking path on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering classic scenery and a steady climb to Uhuru Peak. It’s unique because it uses permanent huts instead of tents, providing extra protection from wind and rain, which makes it ideal for the rainy season. Trekkers sleep in dormitory-style huts with simple mattresses and pillows, and snacks, bottled water, and soft drinks are available along the way—hence its nickname, the “Coca-Cola Route.”
This route is considered one of the easier trails due to its gradual ascent, but the final camp to summit day involves about 1,000 meters of vertical gain, making the last steps challenging. It’s also the shortest route, typically done in five days, which means less time to acclimatize and a higher risk of altitude sickness.
Marangu Route is the only route where climbers ascend and descend on the same trail, so the scenery is repeated, and the trail can get busy during peak season. Despite this, its combination of accessibility, hut accommodation, and stunning landscapes makes it a popular choice for first-time climbers or those short on time.
