Adam Kawa, the visionary CEO of Velam Tours & Safaris Ltd, was born and raised in Katanin Village, nestled in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Growing up in a rural village with his single mother and two younger sisters, Adam learned early the value of resilience, hard work, and entrepreneurship. With a deep connection to his roots, Adam’s journey into the tourism industry began at the tender age of 10, when he started a small business selling fruits from his grandmother’s farm and sell to the international teachers of International school in Shant town in Moshi Area. On weekends, Adam would set up a stand under a large tree outside the international school main gate, selling seasonal fruits. This humble venture instilled in him not only a strong work ethic but also a deep understanding of the importance of local resources and the community—a lesson that would serve as the foundation of his future in the tourism sector.
After excelling in his Standard Seven exams, Adam’s life took a significant turn. He was welcomed into the world of tourism when his father, recognizing his potential, brought him to Marangu village, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro‘s famous Coca-Cola Route. There, Adam was immersed in the tourism business, learning the ropes of hospitality and tourism operations at a young age. His passion for the industry grew as he observed how tourism could transform lives, not only for the tourists who came from far and wide but also for the local communities.
Pursuing his educational dreams, Adam later enrolled in various institutions in Tanzania for higher studies, before embarking on a journey to the United Kingdom to earn a master’s degree from the University of Birmingham city. Upon returning to East Africa, Adam worked with multiple corporations at both operational and strategic levels. However, the pull of his childhood passion for tourism and his desire to make a meaningful impact on his home country led him back to the industry that had shaped his early life.
In the past few years, Adam founded Velam Tours & Safaris Ltd, with a vision to offer a tourism experience that reflects Tanzania’s natural beauty, rich culture, and diverse landscapes. Velam reflects Adam’s belief in providing not just travel, but authentic, transformative experiences for those who choose to explore Tanzania. Velam’s brand was crafted to represent both elegance and strength. The name “Velam” derives from the fine skin of wild animals, symbolizing beauty and resilience, and the logo incorporates the Ostrich, a bird known for its graceful neck and powerful legs—metaphors for the strength and smoothness that define Velam’s approach to service and adventure. The colours of the logo—black and white—reflect the natural elegance of the ostrich, while standing as the core hues for the Velam brand.
Adam’s childhood also fostered a strong appreciation for sustainable practices and the well-being of animals. Growing up, he was involved in raising and caring for livestock—cows, goats, and sheep—on his grandmother’s farm. Through this experience, Adam learned not only about the importance of animal welfare but also the value of preserving the environment that sustains both people and animals. These formative experiences would later influence his commitment to making Velam Tours & Safaris an eco-friendly company, dedicated to protecting both the environment and wildlife.
